On behalf of all the leaders here at the California Republican Assembly, I would like to wish all you fathers a very Happy Father’s Day.

According to Diario NY, Father’s Day arose in 1909 when a woman named Sonora Smart Dood proposed that all parents be celebrated on June 19 because she wanted to honor her father, Henry Jackson Smart, at that time. He was a war veteran who, despite his occupations, raised his six children alone on a rural farm in Washington after the death of his wife. Her request was heard and Father’s Day was celebrated for the first time, in a massive way, on June 19, 1910, in Spokane, Washington.

Five years later, in 1924, President Calvin Coolidge, a Republican, established the day as a national celebration. President Lyndon Johnson institutionalized it in 1966 after signing a presidential proclamation declaring the third Sunday in June as the official day of celebration. In 1972, President Richard Nixon, also a Republican, declared it a national holiday.

Being a good father can easily go unnoticed, yet it is one of the most valuable assets to a family. Here’s to celebrating you today and every other day of the year. Happy Father’s Day!
